Philips Home Control celebrates 1 billionth milestone in remote control production at IBC
IBC 2010, Amsterdam – Philips Home Control is proud to announce it has now produced 1 billion remote controls since manufacturing commenced in 1991. The timing of this major milestone coincides with the company’s participation at this year’s IBC. This achievement underscores Philips’ leadership position in remote control production for OEM customers worldwide.
Philips has pioneered remote control technology, having played a key role in the development of industry standards such as RC5, RC6, RCMM and recently ZigBeeRF4CE, providing for an extensive portfolio of features and solutions that improve the performance, ease-of-use and functionality of remote controls.
Over the years, Home Control has expanded to provide both standard and customized wireless input and control solutions for major electronics manufacturers worldwide. Today, Philips is a preferred partner to leading companies in the home entertainment domain, offering complete innovative solutions for all possible applications, ranging from IPTV to cable & satellite, consumer electronics, home automation and pc-based applications.
In the past the lack of an RF industry standard proved to be a real barrier for adoption in mainstream remote control applications. This has all changed with the development of ZigBeeRF4CE. ZigBeeRF4CE is the first open RF remote control standard for audio video consumer electronics, based on 802.15.4 technology. The standard enables low cost bi-directional RF remote control applications, low power consumption and increased design flexibility for your products.
As one of its founding members, Philips brought deep market and application knowledge combined with technology experience into the RF4CE consortium. Being a co-founder of this major breakthrough technology ensures that Philips is the perfect partner to guide OEM’s when deciding to switch to RF.
Among the innovative solutions presented at IBC by Philips Home Control are the latest pointing control solutions. Home Control is showcasing successful design-ins and commercialized products where the UI and the remote merge seamlessly, providing the ultimate experience for the consumer.
And as interaction with TV & STB’s is needed more than ever, text input solutions are omnipresent, offering unprecedented ease of use. With smart solutions such as a dual face keyboard, Philips shows sophistication & technology can coincide perfectly.
At the same time, Philips is focusing on becoming ‘greener’, with endless measurements taken to protect the environment.
A great recent example of Philips Home Control’s efforts is Philips China becoming the winner of the “China best low carbon company” list, initiated by The Economic Observer, one of the leading Chinese national business media.
Commenting on reaching the 1 billionth milestone, Jean-Paul Abrams, General Manager OEM business, Philips Home Control said: “We are delighted to announce our outstanding capabilities in the development and manufacturing of control devices here at IBC and to showcase our latest products and world-class technological expertise. It is also the ideal opportunity to present our achievements to many of our valued customers who are leaders in the broadcast industry. Thanks to them, we were able to reach this milestone of 1 billion remotes.”

Philips Home Control unveils DUAL, a unique keyboard remote
IBC 2010, Amsterdam – Philips Home Control is launching DUAL; a keyboard remote as the must-see novelty at IBC. It’s the perfect solution to tackle the growing need for interactive devices allowing for text input.
Whereas in the past web access and interaction was restricted to PC devices, nowadays there is a clear trend that Broadcast Service providers, Consumer Electronics manufacturers as well as PC manufacturers are looking into offering two-way enabled connected devices for the living room. New features already available today include media-guides, web browsing as well as widgets accessing tightly integrated social and information-based contents & applications.

In addition, social networking at local TV stations has gained considerable significance over the past year, as broadcasters integrate this feature into their online presence and storytelling.
Traditional on-screen user interface and remote controls are not designed or adequate to handle these features and thus a new approach is required. And while service providers are investing in new on-screen user interfaces, these can only offer a fulfilling user experience when combined with intuitive wireless input & control devices.
With its new keyboard remote, Philips Home Control provides the perfect solution and shows that sophistication and innovation can go hand in hand.
The new product is a remote and a keyboard in one, with the top side featuring a remote control, and the bottom side featuring a keyboard.
By simply turning the remote, a keyboard is available allowing text input as needed in media search, instant messaging and web browsing purposes.
The appliance is equipped with alternate input methods like pointing, touchpad, or optical sensor, allowing user interfaces to implement free cursor, gesturing and moving highlight mechanisms thereby making browsing a better experience than the traditional 4 directional keys.
“This new keyboard remote shows that we are on top of the upcoming trend” says Rick Siu, Director Product Management, Philips Home Control.
“It was challenging to develop this remote to cater for all these features, while at the same time we wanted the design to be slim, easy to operate and modern looking.
From the enormous interest we have gathered during the pre-launch period, I can honestly say we succeeded with glory.”

Philips on the forefront with first remote control solutions designed for ZigBee RF4CE
Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Philips Home Control is today emphasizing its role as a technology pioneer in the remote control market with the first remote control solution designed for ZigBee RF4CE.
Philips Home Control has a long history of innovation when it comes to communication and control technologies and protocols. Besides successful infrared standards such as RC6 and RCMM, Philips developed different RF based solutions, including RCRF8. Building on that past, Philips has been using the 802.15.4 radio technology in different products since 2007. The radio technology has for example been applied in LCD remote controls such as the SRM7500 and TSU9200 to control music libraries residing in a PC or in an iPod – buy using a dedicated iPod docking station SJM3151.
The deep market and application knowledge combined with the technology experience were the elements Philips brought into the RF4CE consortium as one of its founding members, together with Panasonic, Samsung and Sony. The technology was developed in conjunction with contributors Freescale, OKI and Texas Instruments.
RF4CE is the first open RF remote control standard for audio video consumer electronics, based on 802.15.4 technology. The standard enables low cost bi-directional RF remote control applications, low power consumption and increased design flexibility for your products. In March 2009 the RF4CE Consortium agreed to work with the ZigBee Alliance to jointly deliver this standardized specification for radio frequency based (RF) remote controls. The standard is now called ‘ZigBee RF4CE’. It is designed for a wide range of products, including home entertainment devices, garage door openers, keyless entry systems and many more. Products like HDTV, home theater equipment, set-top boxes and other audio video equipment will benefit from the advanced functionality offered.
Today, Philips is proud to announce the first remote control solutions designed for ZigBee RF4CE. These solutions include remote control reference designs and receiver modules helping OEMs to design-in ZigBee RF4CE in their product.
RF remotes are faster, more reliable and provide more freedom to operate devices from greater distances removing the line-of-sight barrier of today’s infrared (IR) remote controls. As more devices add Internet connectivity and the ability for two-way communication and greater interactivity grows, RF remotes offer the prospect of better communication with devices: they can sense the status of the devices they control, for example, and report that back to the user. Users can also input information through more evolved interfaces. According to ABI research, the growth curve for these products is just beginning, but is forecast to show a 55 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2014.
“While RF solutions have been available for years, the lack of an industry standard has proven to be a real barrier for adoption in mainstream RC applications”, says Rudy Musschebroeck, Marketing Manager for Philips Home Control. “Zigbee RF4CE proves to be the answer. We experience a lot of traction in the market and expect to see multiple design-ins in the near future.”

Philips’ groundbreaking remote control technologies put their customers one step ahead
Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Philips Home Control is today emphasizing its role as a leader in the remote control market with the successful design in and commercialization of several pioneering technologies that were shown at IBC last year.
Thanks to Philips innovations, it is now simpler & easier than ever for consumers to control their home entertainment systems. Philips Home Control is showcasing uWand, a direct pointing motion sensing technology that delivers 3D capabilities with the same intuitiveness as a multi-touch screen. It gives an immediate and accurate response without extra effort. Combined with the 3D gesture control, the simplicity of the device gives more possibilities and ease of use. A small camera embedded in the handheld gives uWand the intuitive direct pointing capability. You can directly interact with interactive services on the TV screen by pointing, clicking and using fluent gestures. Philips Home Control is the preferred supplier of the uWand technology.
Another good example of Philips innovation is the remarkable 4-in-1 remote control developed for the Lenovo All-in-One A600 PC. This remote control makes use of the Philips relative motion sensing platform that allows you to navigate and select your desired content by simply moving your wrist, or even play games through the movement of the remote. “Philips is the leading motion remote supplier in the world”, says Lenovo Senior Product Planning Manager, Sean Liu. “We have a good cooperation in the product development and jointly delivered this innovative product to the market.”
Cable and IPTV providers are also looking to offer a total experience to the consumer. Oregan Networks, a leading provider of embedded solutions for digital home entertainment devices, is already designing-in a motion sensing remote. Milya Timergaleyeva, Oregan’s VP of Market Strategy says, “Philips motion sensing technology is a significant step forward in remote control innovation. Originally limited to the gaming domain, but intrinsically versatile in its use and benefits, it allows for greater interactivity for just about every type of application on TV, ranging from niche gaming scenarios to point-and-click experience with browser-driven applications, such as electronic programming guides, home media browsing and widgets. It essentially represents the ‘mouse’ of the TV world. Oregan is delighted to be working with Philips on exciting new consumer entertainment products.”
Philips continues to invest in consumer research to improve its motion sensing propositions. Unlike other motion sensing technologies available today, Philips’ platform is ready to work as a bi-directional voice handset enabling VOIP application as well, ideal for service providers looking at enabling a STB as the option to their telephony services.
There are also other ways to easily navigate through all different home entertainment content. Philips believes this should be as easy as selecting channels on a television. That’s why the company was able to sell its advanced thumbwheel technology which – unlike pressing a button – makes it simple for users to scroll through large amounts of audio/video content like long playlists, with variable speed. Hard disk drives and TV’s of Philips including this technology are already on the market and several Set-Top-Box manufacturers are designing it in, offering unprecedented simplicity in digital content management.
Together with ease of use, users want the freedom to fully control their home entertainment equipment, even when hidden inside a cabinet. To address this need, Philips developed several two-way radio frequency (2-way RF) platforms, and has successfully designed this into e.g. internet-radio, where the screen of the remote allows the display of album art and easy selection of tracks, making it much more comfortable and fun for the users to choose their music.
As radio frequency is becoming increasingly important as the way to control your devices, the RF4CE consortium was brought to life. As a technology pioneer, Philips is one of the co-founders of this consortium.RF4CE is the first open RF remote control standard for audio video consumer electronics, based on 802.15.4 technology. Philips’ ZigBeeRF4CE solutions include remote control reference designs and receiver modules helping you to design-in ZigBeeRF4CE in your product.
Apart from technologies to make it easier to control your devices, Philips has also made it simpler to set up its universal remote controls to work with a large variety of components. In the past, setting up a universal remote control often resulted in frequent calls to customers’ helpdesks, tying up unnecessary resources. Thanks to an optimized database structure and various consumer-validated ease of setup features, Philips remotes are enabling customers to cut down on their helpdesk calls.
“Home entertainment equipment is becoming increasingly complex, and more and more of these different components are linked in a home network,” said Jean-Paul Abrams, Global Commercial Manager, Philips Home Control. “Consumers are looking for solutions that are easy and intuitive to set-up, straightforward to control, and work as expected. Our innovations in home controls make it possible for them to realize their needs.”
